Last night STP made it official, they’re dating again. Yes, STP is THAT couple. The one where their whole relationship is pain in the ass for everyone else because they’d wait until they had an audience, like a party or a wedding or a baptism, and then they’d explode at each other with a vitriolic list of petty irritations, knock over a table and storm off. Then they’d spend the rest of the evening walking from group to group campaigning for their side while glaring at each other across the room. Finally theyd announce at the end of the party/wedding/baptism that it was over forever. Then a couple hours later they’re screwing on the hood of your Taurus.
Well, that’s where STP is right now. Leaving ass prints on your hood.
Last night STP performed publicly for the first time since they broke up about eight years ago. They played somewhere in the Hollywood Hills for about 30 minutes, running through a parade of hits. Video is apparently up in the net. I didn’t really look because I don’t care all that much but, if that’s your thing, it’s out there.
This little show was just to announce the tour to accompany the reunion. The first leg of their 65 city tour was announced yesterday and it leaves off in Seattle on August 31st. As usual, Portland is not on the tour schedule but there’s a strong possibility they will be stopping by. The hang-up right now seems to be when. More on that later.
Oh, but wait, there’s more. STP also plans to hit the studio. Dean DeLeo says that after the touring is all done, assuming no one’s smeared in baptism cake and fingernail scratches, they will start recording another album.
Korn fans, in case you need further confirmation that your favorite 90’s nu metal hold out are on the verge of implosion, I have news. As if it wasn’t enough that over half of what was once Korn has chosen to do other things, like side projects, weed and God (not necessarily in that order), now it looks like the creative end of the pool is so shallow and the likelihood of a new album is so low that the band and the label are releasing another “best of.”
Now, to the untrained eye, this is just collection of songs and means nothing about the band’s future. But to anyone who has lived to see some of their favorite bands release a series of “best ofs” this is portent of doom. One “best of” could just mean the band needs some fast cash, but since this will be their second greatest hits, this means “fulfillment of contractual obligation.” Korn has a contract saying they have to release a certain number of records. If they can’t or won’t do that, the record company isn’t just shrug and go “oh well.” They plan to make that money somehow and that’s usually when you get a “best of.” I’m not sure how many records Korn has left on their contract, but if you see them releasing a “Live from…” concert record, you know the break-up announcement will follow close behind it.
This just in, KORN plans to issue a concert DVD titled "Live in Montreaux 2004" on May 13 and will contain live footage of the band performing live before Head left.
